Serengeti Plain - the Wildebeests

There are well over 1 million Wildebeests roaming the Serengeti.
They are a source of food to the lions, hyenas, cheetahs, leopards and others I suppose.
We did not see any kills, but saw lots of Mom's with their youngsters.

Wildebeests cover the Serengeti Plain, very much like Buffalo would have covered the Great Plains of America in the day.
Think about that.

All the black dots in the background are Wildebeests.

A few casual grazers.

The great migration was just beginning and here is one very small herd on the move.
You'll see lots, and lots of herds when we take you on our balloon ride.

Young Wildebeests are at high risk when they are separated from the herd.
They are an easy "happy meal" for the Lions.
Their chance of survival is almost nil.

These two seem uncertain which way to go.

And, they have made a bad choice.
They are heading right at us, away from the herd.

An ever vigilant Mom, assesses the situation.

And here she comes to the rescue....

Kids in tow, they cross the road in front of us to safety.

Driving along, Ahmed spotted a very new born Gazelle - no more than an hour old.
We went off road to take a closer look.
This of course panicked Mom, who took off in hopes we would chase her.
But even at just an hour old, the new borns know to lie down so pursuers will not see them, and chase Mom instead.

Of course Wildebeests are not the any animal that causes traffic problems, and roam the plain.
